The city of Oxford also known as the city of dreaming spires
was first mentioned in the 912 Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which
states that King Edward took control of "London and Oxford
and the lands obedient to those cities." Oxford, originally
known as "Oxenaforda" had emerged as a significant
town since the foundation of a monastery there by St. Frideswide
in the 8th century. Certainly Oxford was not a centre of any
importance by the time the Romans invaded Britain. Unlike towns
such as London, Colchester, and Chester, Oxford seems to have
been largely ignored by the Roman conquerors, although there
is evidence of pottery kilns here which may have supplied earthenware
vessels to the new rulers of the island.
It is one of those small towns which have typical English anamolies
making it a popular tourist destination with a bustling feel
in the crowded central core and pockets of calm just a few feet
away. It is home to the University of Oxford, the oldest university
in the English-speaking world The history of Oxford is twined
around the growth of Oxford University, though its citizens
had what could best be described as a love/hate relationship
with little of the former and a heap of the latter with the
students who flocked the Oxford University colleges since the
12th century. The colleges of Oxford University are studies
in contrast, ranging from the early medieval grandeur of Brasenose
to the Tudor Christ Church, and the more modern lines of Keble
College. It is important to know that each oxford college is
different from each other and has a distinct personality.
Besides the famous Oxford University, one cannot ignore the
other attractions of the city like the various museums which
include museum of the history of science whose display includes
the earliest scientific instruments, astrolabs, early chemical
apparatus, clocks, medical instruments, and Einstein's blackboard
etc, museum of oxford which tells the story of Oxford, the university;
history, archaeology, architecture and the environment. University
of oxford botanic garden is also a must see as it houses over
8000 species of plants. Glass houses hold collection of tropical
plants. For a bird's-eye view of the city and colleges, climb
Carfax Tower, located in the center of the city. This structure
is distinguished by its clock and figures that strike on the
quarter-hour. Carfax Tower is all that remains from St. Martin's
Church, where William Shakespeare once stood as godfather for
William Davenant, who also became a successful playwright. Rycote
chapel is a lovely 15c chapel with exquisitely carved and painted
woodwork having many intriguing features including two roofed
pews and a musician's gallery.
