Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk was once the capital of East Anglia and the town and surrounding area are full of history. From its humble Saxon beginnings, Bury St Edmunds became home to one of the most powerful Abbeys in mediaeval Europe and has seen glory, turmoil and scandal over the centuries which few small towns can boast of. Today, it remains a busy and beautiful market town at the heart of East Anglia.
Despite a series of riots and rebellions among the townsfolk in the 14th century, Bury St Edmunds developed into a prosperous market town with a thriving clothmaking industry and it enjoyed royal recognition. St Mary's Church was completed in 1427 and it is here that Mary Tudor, sister of one regular visitor, Henry VIII, is buried. This lovely mediaeval market town has a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout the year. Convenient for visit to Cambridge and only two hours from London, it is the perfect place to bring an organized group or to visit with family and friends. The present boundary of St Edmundsbury was established during the local government reorganisation of 1974. The history of each part of the Borough's varied landscape, however, has been inextricably intertwined for centuries. Traces of Stone Age hunters at Barnham and Bury St Edmunds tell of the first farmers working in the rich soils of the north of the area. Thousands of finds from the Saxon and earlier periods are on display among the archaeological collections in various museums in the city.
The city offers a list of attractions like the Moyse's Hall Museum, which is Award winning Museum that provides a window onto the Heritage collections of St Edmundsbury. Here you will find items that may bring back memories from the past, fascinating objects associated with local characters along with many more gruesome items. Suffolk Regiment Museum has the bulk of the Regimental collection. Many items from the Regiment's long history including The Roubaix Drum can be seen there. Nowton Park is also a good place for a perfect holiday. It consists of almost 200 acres of Suffolk countryside, landscaped over one hundred years ago in typical Victorian style with 'country estate' features. Specimen trees and wild flowers are a feature, with a spectacular daffodil display in the spring
