Cardiff - The Capital City of Wales and its largest city located on the south coast of Wales is administered as a unitary authority. Cardiff's history reflects the fascinating and often turbulent history of the British islands. Many conquerors have recognised the strategic influence of Cardiff's location - on the mouth of the River Taff - on the rest of the region that is now familiar to us as South Wales. It was a small town until the early nineteenth century and came to prominence following the arrival of industry in the region and the use of Cardiff as a major port for the transport of coal. It eventually grew to become the largest city in Wales and a major centre of culture, sport and history in the UK. Although bestowed with a royal charter in 1581 by the then Queen, Elizabeth 1st, and Cardiff entered a period of decline in reputation and population until the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries
Today the city combines the best of the old and the new and offers an excellent location in which to live and study. As a capital city, Cardiff offers excellent opportunities for cultural and social activities. Multi-screen cinemas, theatres, concert venues and many other facilities of arts can be found in the city. Cardiff is known as an affordable capital city. City centre of Cardiff is known as one of the most attractive regional shopping centres in Britain. Only a short walk from the main university campus, the shopping centre offers plenty of choice, from designer ranges to department stores to popular high-street names such as H & M, Oasis, Virgin Mega store, Monsoon, Next, Kookai and Marks and Spencer. Cardiff is home to the National Orchestra of Wales and the internationally renowned Welsh National Opera, the latter of which is now housed at the spectacular Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, opened in November 2004. The New Theatre's programme of events regularly includes off-Broadway musicals, plays and ballet, while the Sherman Theatre and Chapter Arts Centre offer an eclectic mix of more contemporary film, dance and drama. Cardiff's city centre seems an unlikely place to find a castle. However, in the midst of this urbanization, Cardiff's ancient past is grandly displayed in the form of a fine castle.

The cards will be the size of a credit card, and will offer simple tips, like sitting in the back of a car, asking for the driver's license number, or taking note of the registration number of the vehicle.
Cardiff is a post-industrial city. There was a time - one which many who live here now can still remember - when the place stank permanently of coal, fume and ash but now spreads the fragrances of an attractive culturally rich tourist destination. |
