Taxis in Dover
Known as the 'Lock and Key of England'. Dover controls the English Channel. Julius Caesar tried to land at Dover during the Roman Invasion of 55 BC and it was the prime objective of the invasion plans of William the Conqueror, Napoleon and Hitler. Dover's history can be traced back as a military and garrison town which can be seen in the extensive remains of its Roman forts, Napoleonic forts and defences from both the World Wars when Dover was Britain's Frontline Town. Dover is named from the stream which runs through the town called the Dour a Celtic river name 'dubräs' meaning 'the waters'. The town of Dover is situated on the South East Coast of England, probably best known for its 'White Cliffs of 'Dover' and its part in the Dunkirk Evacuation (Operation Dynamo) during World war II. The cliffs gave Britain its nickname of Albion, meaning "white".

Today, Dover still relies on the harbour for its prosperity. It is the busiest passenger ferry terminal in the world, the busiest cruise liner terminal in Britain and a major port for freight, particularly for fruit and other perishables imported via the massive reefer cargo ships. Deep underground lies an extensive network of tunnels - first dug during the Napoleonic Wars, but so strategically useful that they continued to be used right through the 20th century.

For many, Dover is merely a stepping stone to the holiday but to do this is to neglect some of country's great treasures. Great finds from the Bronze Age, such as a 3,550 year old boat are on display at the Dover Museum. Relics also remain from the next great era, the Roman period when the main road known as Watling Street ran between London and Dover. There has been a castle at Dover since the defences of an Anglo-Saxon fortress were strengthened by William of Normandy, who built the first earthwork castle in 1066 before moving on to London. Under Henry II, the castle was rebuilt, including the monumental keep - constructed in the 1180s by Henry's great architect, Maurice the Engineer - which stands at the heart of a concentric ring of defences. Another important landmark of the city is Langdon Cliffs the Gateway to the White Cliffs which are accessible only on foot but the trip can combine Dover's white cliffs with a visit to a historical Victorian lighthouse. This National Trust property incorporates 5 miles of countryside and coastline offering spectacular views of the white cliffs (100m) and the Dover Straits, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
