As the religious capital of Britain, Canterbury stood in the central stage of an often turbulent history. The centuries saw repeated sacking by the Danes, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and targeting by the Baedeker Raids, the infamous Nazi plan to obliterate Britain's historic sites. Despite the turbulence, Canterbury survived and is now home to one of Britain's Unesco World Heritage Sites. There has been a settlement since prehistoric times. Bronze Age finds and Neolithic round barrows have been discovered in this area.
Before the Roman arrival Durovernum was the most important settlement in Kent. Canterbury known in Latin as Durovernum Cantiacorum became a Roman administrative centre which layed at the junction of three roads from their ports of Regulbium (Reculver), Dubris (Dover) and Lemanis (Lympne); and it stood on what has become known as Watling Street. The name Canterbury derives from the Old English Cantwarebyrig, meaning "fortress of the men of Kent". The city became a county corporate in 1461.French Protestant refugees settled in the city during the sixteenth century and here they introduced silk-making. During World War II the city was severely damaged by bombing after it was selected as one of the cities in England to be targeted by the Luftwaffe in the Baedeker Blitz.
In 1944 the city was celebrated by film directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in their film A Canterbury Tale. Canterbury today is a major city for tourism with Canterbury Cathedral alone attracting 1.2 million visitors every year. It still contains many ancient buildings and modern building activity within the medieval town centre is strictly regulated. One good thing about the place was that it was pedestrianised to enable the tourists to walk about more freely. The council had planned to convert the Cathedral into a multi-storey car park so the tourists could park and visit the shops in the City. Luckily, this plan was dismissed, largely because the council had invented a Park and Ride scheme and wanted people to park outside the City walls. Trip to the city may be incomplete without visiting the Cathedral. Canterbury Cathedral is simply a magnificent work which must be seen to be fully appreciated. Even those with the least spiritual attentions will want to linger here and one can easily spend half a day in its beauty. Roman Museum lying in the vicinity of the cathedral is housed underground at the original level of the Roman Town exhibiting excavations of Roman artefacts and some well preserved mosaics from part of a surviving town house. Other museums to visit are The Royal Museum and Art Gallery that features works by Henry Moore and Gainsborough.
