From its earliest foundations in Anglo-Saxon times, Sunderland has grown and prospered on the banks of the River Wear. It is a city and port in the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, in the county of Tyne and Wear in North East England.
The city's history and culture took shape due to its connection to the sea, its industries and endeavour of its people. The city's emergence as a focus for learning and industry began in Anglo-Saxon times when the nobleman Benedict Biscop - recently named as Sunderland's patron saint - established a European centre of learning at the twin monastic settlement of St Peter's and St Paul's. It was here that the Venerable Bede wrote the first history of England, the art of glass-making was introduced to the UK, and where the renowned Saxon Bible, the Codex Amiatinus, was produced. By the year 1500, Sunderland was one of the wealthiest towns in England and to this day it is still the largest city by population between Leeds and Edinburgh.
Sunderland is aiming to become a more accessible city. With a rich and fascinating heritage going back centuries, Sunderland has a superb array of places of historical interest to visit and explore. It is home to some of the most visited cultural attractions in the country. A number of Sunderland's heritage attractions are also a must watch. Many cities can boast fantastic facilities for arts and culture but the calibre and content of Sunderland's galleries, museums and theatres offer regular features in critics' 'must-see' lists, attract travelling shows and exhibitions on their first stop outside London. The Rhyhope Engines Museum is based on the Rhyhope pumping station which was built in 1868 to supply water to the Sunderland area. This Museum is regarded as the greatest industrial monument in the north of England. The interior of the recently refurbished Sunderland Empire is resplendent in red velvet and gold leaf, now pulling in even bigger crowds with its programme of major West End hits and one-off shows. In the Winter Gardens, rebuilt on the site of the original Victorian glass houses, a tropical rainforest flourishes with palms, tree ferns, bananas and citrus trees all housed in a stainless steel and glass rotunda. Overhead, a treetop walkway gives a birds-eye view of the lush canopy of foliage, complete with a 30ft water feature and individual micro climates.
Sunderland is an ideal place if one wants to take a short break from the busy schedules and has plenty to offer as leisure activities. The best way is to hire a Taxi (Taxi Hire Sunderland) while touring the city destinations and attractions. Hackney Carriages in the City of Sunderland are White in colour. They are fitted with a full width roof sign bearing the word "TAXI" and exhibit a square shaped colored license plate. But it can carry a limited number of people which may be specified on the plate or the license. They can be hailed in the street or they are even stationed at their designated Taxi Ranks or if you are shopping or having a good leisure activity hiring a taxi (Taxi Hire Sunderland, Private Hire Sunderland, Coach Hire Sunderland, Airport Transfers Sunderland) easily accessible in public places as well.
