To some Swansea has always borne the ambience of a self confident
and forward looking locality. However, this mood conceals the
hallmarks of a fascinating historical city which owes its evolution
to a broad variety of influences and innovations which date
back to medieval times. The Upper Swansea Valley lies at the
southern extremity of the 2000 square miles covered by the county
of Powys. While the northern edge of the county touches the
foothills of Snowdonia, the southern border is close to the
industrial centres of the valleys .Most of the Breconshire part
of the Swansea valley lies in the old parish of Ystradgynlais,
once an agricultural area of about 12,000 acres. It is uncertain
when coal mining first began in the valley but iron was made
at the Ystradgynlais Iron Works at least as long ago as the
early eighteenth century.
The presence of coal and iron ore in the locality offered several
commercial possibilities and with the development of David Thomas'
hot-blast furnace, which used local anthracite, the industrialisation
of the valley proceeded with great pace. The workers for these
new industries were housed in the small communities springing
up along the valley The Upper Swansea Valley serves as a southern
gateway to the Brecon Beacons National Park, and it includes
the 19th century mansion of Craig-y-Nos Castle and its Country
Park near the former iron-making town of Ystradgynlais. The
valley is cut off from the rest of Breconshire by the great
mass of Black Mountain and Forest Fawr to the north, with just
this narrow pass (left) allowing access. Although a part of
Breconshire, this remoteness has meant that perhaps the valley
communities have more naturally been open to influences from
the south.
Swansea was once a great port and is once again exploiting coastal
location and its long association with the sea. To the west
of the City is the Gower Peninsula, Great Britain's first Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty whose west facing beaches are
Wales' premier surfing location. The new National Waterfront
Museum, detailing Wales' industrial and maritime heritage, is
located in the Maritime Quarter. At the very heart of this award
winning Maritime Quarter is Swansea Marina, surrounded by restaurants,
shops and marine businesses and bordered on one side by a sandy
beach. Existing historical buildings have been turned into modernised
dockside apartments, restaurants and hotels.
