Sandwell is a metropolitan borough in the West
Midlands of England. It is made up of the Black Country towns
of Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and
West Bromwich. Sandwells most important feature is its citizens
- nearly 283,000 of them residing in boroughs split into six
towns having neighbourhoods of a variety of ages and cultures
living together. Besides the changes in the borough's industrial
structure over many years, much effort has gone into making
Sandwell a better place to live, work and play. The local authority,
local firms, training and business agencies and community groups
have all worked together to meet the needs of its citizens.
Sandwell has a number of vibrant communities, with a plethora
of local organisations supporting them. Some of them which are
based in the area cater for specific interests such as hobbies
or religious groups and some are set up to provide voluntary
services to those in need of extra help and support Many groups
and organisations across the borough play an important role
in developing the Cultural strategy of Sandwell and directions
were given to them along with the Councils cultural Services.
Recently a revised Cultural Strategy was published for Sandwell.
In addition, Sandwell's location, at the heart of the West Midlands
conurbation, makes it well placed to develop its cultural assets
for the benefit of both local communities and visitors. Sandwell
Valley Country Park is an oasis of countryside filled with parklands,
woodlands, hidden pools, picnic sites, wildlife refuges, wildfowl
lakes and the remains of an old Benedictine monastery. See the
famous Tamworth pig at Sandwell Park Farm a nineteenth century
mixed farm with animal breeds and crops as appropriate to the
period. Enhancing the borough's leisure attractions are the
number of green spaces including Forge Mill Farm, Town and Neighbourhood
Parks, Allotments and Galton Valley Heritage Centre.
Whether you plan to visit Sandwell by car, train or plane, getting
to and around Sandwell could not be simpler. The borough lies
at the heart of the country's motorway and rail networks and
is relatively close to international and light plane airports.
. All of the campuses are easily accessible via road, rail,
bus and metro links. Nearby Birmingham is one of the main transport
hubs of the country.
From a tourist point of view the best you can do is hire a taxi
and within a short taxi drive you can have the best of both
worlds, the rich heritage of the Black Country and the excitement
of Birmingham City centre. Taxis and Private Hire Cars can be
booked in advance, and offer a door to door style of transport.
Private Hire Cars are ordinary saloon, estate cars, or specially
converted wheelchair accessible vehicles which are licensed
by the Local Authority to carry passengers who book their journey
in advance. Taxis are either ordinary cars or black cabs, depending
on the area and the operator.
Since the Millennium, parts of Sandwell have been transformed
and many new plans have been developed. The city is trying hard
to give its visitors entertainment and leisure activities with
many such plans in the pipeline.
