Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough
in North West England, along the eastern side of the Mersey
Estuary.Built across a ridge of hills rising up to a height
of around 230 feet (70 metres) above sea-level at Everton Hill,
the city's urban area runs directly into Bootle and Crosby in
Sefton to the north, and Huyton and Prescot in Knowsley to the
east. John's letters patent of 1207 announced the foundation
of the borough of Liverpool and by the middle of the 16th century
the population was still only around 500. Liverpool was made
a parish in 1699 by Act of Parliament, that same year its first
slave ship, Liverpool Merchant, set sail for Africa.
The first wet dock in Britain was built in Liverpool. When the
Irish began arriving by the thousands due to the Great Famine,
the population continued to rise rapidly, especially during
the 1840s. The advent of containerization meant that Liverpool's
docks became largely obsolete. In the early 1980s unemployment
rates in Liverpool were amongst the highest in the UK.In 1974,
Liverpool became a metropolitan district within the newly created
metropolitan county of Merseyside. It had previously been in
Lancashire. At the end of the century Liverpool was concentrating
on regeneration which still continues today, with the city winning
the accolade of European Capital of Culture for 2008. The heart
of the city and its waterfront sit proudly as a World Heritage
Site. Liverpool has a startling range of attractions and have
been awarded the title of Capital of Culture. The city has two
famous Cathedrals The Anglican Cathedral and the Metropolitan
Cathedral which are fine examples of internationally recognised
architecture. The superb art deco Philharmonic Hall, home of
the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, also features a
broad programme of top names from rock, jazz, world, contemporary
music and comedy. Today Maritime heritage weaves a rich thread
through the city from the Three Graces on the Waterfront to
the Albert Dock, home of the Merseyside Maritime Museum. You
can also visit the Knowsley Safari Park, Croxteth Hall and Country
Park if you are looking for that ideal short break. These places
then are a boon. The city is excellent for shopping freaks as
well. City centre's newest shopping district, the Met Quarter,
is home to MAC's only store outside London, plus a host of designer
names including Armani, Prada, Gucci etc.
As far as local mobilty is concerned Taxi hiring Services
are the best option one can avail. There are plenty of Hackney
Cabs or Black Cabs operating in Liverpool, especially in the
City Centre. You can either hail a passing Hackney cab or you
can go to one of the City Centre's Taxi ranks. The Hackney Cab
ranks are located at Lime Street Station, James Street Station,
Adelphi Hotel, Whitechapel, Sir Thomas Street and Chinatown.
The city also hosts a number of private hire firms that operate
across the city. Unlike Hackney cabs, you cannot hail and be
picked up by a passing private hire taxi - this is illegal. You
can book a private hire taxi by visiting the company's premises
or by telephone.
