Surrounding the Sunday Lake the city of Wakefield is four miles
East of Bessemer. Wakefield was first discovered as it were
when Iron ore was found near Sunday Lake in 1881. George M Wakefield,
the mine owner of the time who originally surveyed the town's
location was the one after whom the city was named. Today it
forms part of the City of Wakefield metropolitan borough. The
town was a centre for cloth dealing and had its own Piece Hall.
The cathedral was restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The Cathedral
City of Wakefield with its combination of old and new has a
colourful history shaping much of the city and its surroundings.
Historically, Wakefield has been known as the "Merrie City"
and has been well known for its medieval mystery plays. A church
has been on the site of the present day Cathedral of All Saints
since Roman times. The Cathedrals spire is 500 years old and
its 75 metres make it the tallest in Yorkshire. Wakefield District
has always been a centre of strategic and economic significance
as history demonstrates. At the confluence of the mighty Aire
and Calder rivers, the Romans made camp here to protect their
national and local interests. In the Middle Ages the administration
of the North was controlled from redoubtable Pontefract Castle.
Wakefield is also distinctive in having had an unusually high
amount of council housing, although this led to a situation
where, by 2004, the council could no longer keep up with the
maintenance of the houses and sold all of them to a housing
association.Wakefield offers residents and visitors many leisure
opportunities. Museums and galleries such as the Yorkshire Sculpture
Park, Pontefract and Sandal Castles and the National Coal Mining
museum as well as sports facilities, beautiful countryside and
a variety of shopping experiences. The National Coal Mining
Museum is situated in the Overton. However, just a short walk
from Wakefield city centre on Wentworth terrace is Wakefield
Art Gallery, it may only be small but it houses famous sculptural
works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. There are also other
paintings by modern British artists like David Hockney and many
lesser known local artists. Woolley to the south of the area
is home to the impressive Woolley Hall and Woolley Park Golf
Course. Another interesting building is the medieval chantry
chapel of St Mary's Chapel upon Wakefield Bridge. This is one
of only four such chantry chapels to survive in England. The
city's cultural attractions include the Wakefield Theatre Royal
and Opera House and the Wakefield Museum illustrating the history
of the city. Wakefield is famous for the production of rhubarb
and this is celebrated by an annual 8 day 'Rhubarb Festival'.
Wakefield has a long market tradition and still provides excellent
indoor and outdoor markets. On the sporting scene the Wakefield
Trinity Wildcats are a Rugby League team playing Super League
and Wakefield & Emley compete in Football's Unibond League.

more than 4 passengers must be approved by the Council as Licensing
