Surrounding the Sunday Lake the city of Wakefield is four miles East of Bessemer. Wakefield was first discovered as it were when Iron ore was found near Sunday Lake in 1881. George M Wakefield, the mine owner of the time who originally surveyed the town's location was the one after whom the city was named. Woolley to the south of the area is home to the impressive Woolley Hall and Woolley Park Golf Course. Another interesting building is the medieval chantry chapel of St Mary's Chapel upon Wakefield Bridge. This is one of only four such chantry chapels to survive in England. The city's cultural attractions include the Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House and the Wakefield Museum illustrating the history of the city. Wakefield is famous for the production of rhubarb and this is celebrated by an annual 8 day 'Rhubarb Festival'. Wakefield has a long market tradition and still provides excellent indoor and outdoor markets. On the sporting scene the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are a Rugby League team playing Super League and Wakefield & Emley compete in Football's Unibond League.
