The town of Warwick was founded on the banks
of the River Avon in 914 AD by Ethelfleda, sister of Edward
the Elder, on a site overlooking earlier riverside settlements.
As an administrative and geographic unit, the county dates from
the 10th century with the historic county town of Warwick lying
roughly at its centre. In Saxon times Warwickshire formed a
border zone between the kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia.The terrain
is gently rolling, with outcroppings of the Cotswold Hills in
the south. The Avon flowing southwesterly is the chief river.
There are vestiges of the ancient Forest of Arden. The region
is a varied one, largely given to agriculture (wheat and other
grains, dairying, sheep and cattle grazing). Some light industry
is practiced the name 'Warwick' means "dwellings by the
weir". Its fortifications led Warwick to become an important
administrative centre within the Mercian kingdom. In the early
11th century Anglo-Saxon England was divided into administrative
areas known as shires, and the shire administered from Warwick
became known as Warwickshire.

gems of England's medieval history but also those of its more

Although the town was ravaged by the Great Fire in 1694, some
important mediaeval buildings survived. Arbury Hall which is
a beautiful Elizabethan house was built on a 12th century site.
